TRS president ends indefinite fast

December 9, 2009

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi president, K Chandrasekhara Rao has called off his 11 day fast shortly after midnight on Wednesday following an announcement made by Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram in New Delhi that the process of formation of Telangana would be initiated by moving a resolution in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly.

K Chandrasekhara Rao ended his protest on on Thursday at 0010 hours at the NIMS after accepting a glass of juice from Telangana ideologue,K Jayashankar. The impasse ended after Chandrasekhara Rao's son welcomed Union Home Minister's statement. He said the way forward would only be the introduction of a Bill in Parliament, only then will the people of Telangana and the party believe that their dream of having their own State will fructify, he said. However, he said that Telangana without Hyderabad is not acceptable one to TRS.

TRS president Chandrasekhara Rao's decision will defuse the tension that gripped the State and sporadic violence in Telangana Region since November 29 and help restoring normality in Hyderabad, where people resorted to panic buying of petrol and other essential commodities ahead of a rally to the Assembly planned by the JAC students on Telangana on Thursday. The dramatic developments capped day long discussions among Congress leaders in New Delhi and Chidamabaram's assurances to TRS functionaries that the Centre was willing to take a step forward and urging them to prevail upon Chandrasekhara Rao to call of his protest. The fast ended even before the Chief Minister who participated in these consultations rushed here to call of K Chandrasekhara Rao.
