Expert Panel on Telanagana soon

January 28, 2010

The much anticipated expert panel to look into the Telanagana statehood demand in a time bound manner is the process of being finalized. The details of the panel such as the names of its members and its time frame will be announced soon. The final shape of the panel is expected to emerge after the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram holds a last round of meeting with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the next couple of days. If all goes well, a committee would take place by the end of this week and almost concluding the exercise. Chidambaram indicated that the government had more or less finalized the names of Telanagana Committee members. Perhaps by the next week, the committee will be announced, he said.

The Joint Action Committee had set the Centre a January 28 deadline to come out with a time bound programme for carving out Telanagana. Sources said that the Union Home Minister was finalizing the names in consultation with Law Minister Veerappa Moily. Later, he would be seeking the approval of the Prime Minster and Sonia Gandhi.

The committee is likely to be headed by a retired judge. Whether it should have a retired bureaucrat is still being worked out. Also, there is an internal tussle over whether any politician should be on it. The Central government's move to announce the panel comes amid hectic lobbying by the Congress' Telanagana leaders.
