TRS and Congress supporters clashes at Mahabubabad

May 28, 2010

The Kadapa Congress MP, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's Odarpu Yatra in Warangal district broke out on Friday as violence broke out between Telangana supporters and Congress supporters at Mahabubabad culminating in police firing. Police took Jagan Mohan Reddy in preventive custody at Wangapally railway station board the Secunderabad-Guntur Inter City Express by which he was travelling to Mahabubabad and escorted back in a bullet proof vehicle to his residence in Banjara Hills. Jagan Mohan Reddy, however, remained adamant and vowed to undertake the Odarpu Yatra after by elections in Telangana even as the Congress high command decided to take disciplinary action by serving him a show cause notice.

The detention followed pitched battles between the supporters of TRS and his own followers in the Mahabubabad railway station, lying on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada railway route. Nearly 24 persons were injured due to the violence including one protester who is in critical condition with bullet injuries in the MGM Hospital, Warangal. Eight policemen and seven others were badly hurt in stone pelting. DGP RR Girish Kumar said nine Telangana activists sustained bullet injuries when the official gunmen of Congress MLA Konda Surekha, her husband Konda Murali and local MLA M Kavita opened several rounds of fire. They were trapped inside the waiting room on the railway platform as the activists rained the ballast readily available on the track.

Girish Kumar said that the three security officers of three MLAs opened fire when they sensed danger to the lives of the protectees and an inquiry would be conducted whether the firing was justified. Congress supporters elsewhere in the State burnt two bogies of Padmavathi Express at Tirupati and a bandh was observed in Kadapa. Several trains were delayed due to trouble at Mahabubabad and the detention of Inter City Express at Wangapally over three hours. The Telangana Joint Action Committee has called for a Telangana bandh on Saturday in protest against police firing while Jagan Mohan Reddy's supporters called for a bandh in Kadapa district.
