Telangana Self-Respect Day observed

December 9, 2011

The Telangana Joint Action Committee and political parties in Telangana have observed the self-respect day (atma gaurava dinam) across the Telangana region. It was on this day in 2009 that the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has announced the process of creating a separate Telangana state, after a 11-day-long hunger strike by TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao.

Various protests including 'Telangana Jagarana' till midnight, day long fast by Students' JAC etc. are staged on the self-respect day. Former DSP Nalini has begun her indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi. Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Minister for Handlooms P Shankar Rao expressed solidarity to her fast.

TJAC chairman Prof. M Kodandaram, Telangana Jagruti convenor K Kavitha and other Telangana leaders paid tributes to martyrs of Telangana at the Martyrs' Memorial in front of the Assembly. Speaking on the occasion, Kodandaram said that the Congress is the main stumbling block for the Telangana statehood. He said that the TJAC would mount pressure on the Telangana Ministers and Congress MLAs to ask the central leadership for a separate Telangana state. Speaking about the Telugu Desam Party, Kodandaram said that the TDP Telangana Forum leaders can join the movement once they succeed in clarifying the stand of their president N Chandrababu Naidu.

The TD Telangana Forum leaders arrived at the Martyrs memorial later which triggered a clash between TRS women activists and the TD leaders. After a heated argument, the women activists were arrested and taken away.

Fast observed by Students' JAC

The Students' JAC leaders observed a day long fast at the Osmania University campus. Nagam Janardhan Reddy, Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Prof. Kodandaram, Bandaru Dattatreya, Konda Lakshman Bapuji and others paid a visit and expressed their solidarity.
