3-day Rail Roko begins in Telangana

The 3-day Rail Roko called on by the Telangana JAC began today. A large number of Telangana leaders and activists have squatted on rail tracks and were present in large numbers at railway stations as part of the Rail Roko agitations. The Government also deployed heavy police forces at major railway stations and junctures to prevent any untoward situation and to provide security to the trains.

Several leaders arrested

The police also made a large number of arrests. Congress MP Ponnam Prabhakar and Jeeven Reddy were arrested and taken to Manakonduru police station. TRS leader Nayani Narasimha Reddy was arrested at his home in Bharkatpur, while Sirpur MLA Kaveti Sammaiah and JAC convener Kishore Babu were put on house arrest.

20 Telangana activists were arrested in Narsampet of Warangal district. MLA Nallala Odelunu was taken into preventive custody at Mandamarri in Adilabad. 10 student leaders of the Telangana Students' JAC was arrested at Kakatiya University in Warangal. 16 TRS leaders and 20 leader of the New Democracy were also arrested in Nizamabad and Hyderabad respectively.

MP Siricilla Rajaiah was arrested in Kazipet of Warangal district while MLA Kaveti Samayya was taken into custody in Adilabad.

Telangana Jagruti president K Kavitha was arrested when she squatted on railway track in Moula Ali. She was taken to the keesara police station in a bus. It is learnt that a case has been filed against her. The telangana activists threw stones against the bus in protest against the arrest.

Reacting to the number of arrests made, Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao demanded the illegal arrests to be stopped immediately. He said that the government has to bear the consequences of the arrests. He urged to at least stop the arrests of the ministers who took part in the rail roko agitation.

Congress senior leader and Rajya Sabha member K Keshava Rao said that the rail roko agitation is being staged only to take the Telangana statehood issue to the attention of the Centre. He and another MP Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy will take part in Rail Roko agitation in Bhuvanagiri and Kajipet of Nalgonda district.

TRS leader and Sircilla MLA K Taraka Rama Rao is also arrested when he tried to meet Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy at her residence. He was taken to the Golkonda police station. Earlier, he was arrested for a brief time at Seetaphalmandal.

Medak MP Vijayashanti was arrested by the police when she tried to obstruct the MMTS train in Lakdikapul in Hyderabad.

Nizamabad MP Madhu Goud Yaskhi staged a pada yatra from his residence in Nizamabad to participate in the rail roko agitation. He entered into an argument with the local police who tried to stop him from going to the railway tracks. Madhu Yaskhi was later arrested by the police when he staged a sit-in on the road and was taken to the Biknuru police station.

The TDP Telangana forum leaders were also arrested when they tried to cease the CM's camp office. They shouted slogans demanding the withdrawal of cases against employees taking part in the Sakala Janula Samme.

Cases Booked

Warangal SP Rajesh Kumar told the media that cases were booked against Congress MPs and MLAs who participated in the rail roko agitation. He said that the arrested would be sent to remand after informing the Speaker.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad city police commissioner AK Khan said that they are analyzing the law to take appropriate action against those leaders taking part in the rail roko agitation today. He explained the law and order situation to Chief Secretary Pankaj Dwivedi in a high level meeting today. He said that they are considering whether to book cases undeR IPC and CrPC sections or non-bailable cases.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said that 53 have been arrested underr railway law in the Cyberabad police commissionarate region.

The Hussain Sagar express from Hyderabad to Mumbai will start at 3:30 pm today. The South Central Railway have earlier announced that the train was cancelled.
