September 29, 2011

The Telugu Desam Party legislators faced an awkward situation on the National Highway No. 7 at the border of Medak district when they tried to reach Banswada to persuade Congress and TRS nominees for the Banswada by-election next month to withdraw from the contest on ground that Telangana leaders should not contest any election till the separate Telangana state is formed.

The TDP legislators were denied entry into the district by the police to prevent clashes with the local Telangana activists. TDP Telangana Forum convener Errabelli Dayakar Rao and MLA Mandava Venkateswara Rao fainted while arguing with the police. They were immediately taken to a local hospital.

The TDP legislative team comprising of 14 MLAs, 4 MLCs and ex-Ministers T Devender Goud and E Peddi Reddy arrived in an air-conditioned bus. They were attacked by pro-Telangana activists who hurled stones and eggs at them. The TDP activists retailed by beating up a couple of attackers. The news quickly spread to the neighboring villages, several Telangana activists gathered at the spot and began hurling stones. Circle Inspector of Police B Prakash Yadav was injured in the incident. Another group of Telangana activists waited for the TDP legislative team at Pondur near Kamareddy to stop the bus yatra. Realizing this, the police did not allow the TDP legislators to proceed further. However, a few of them got down of the bus and walked on the road for some distance.

The police then arrested the TDP legislators and a number of villagers. The 18 TDP legislators were taken to Ramayampet police station and were later released in the evening. Traffic of the National Highway was severely hit during the incident.
