Betrayal Day observed in Telangana

December 23, 2012

M Kodandaram

The leaders of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) and several pro-Telangana organisations observed "betrayal day" on Sunday. Demonstrations across Telangana region were staged to mark the betrayal day.

The TJAC leaders made an attempt to storm the Congress' State headquarters at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad. The policeman stopped them from gaining an entry into the Gandhi Bhavan, which led the leaders to stage an instant dharna in front of Gandhi Bhavan. They raised pro-Telangana slogans and demanded the Congress to reveal its stand on the Telangana statehood issue before the all-party meeting on December 28.

TJAC chairman Prof. M Kodandaram who led the protests, along with 86 protesters were taken into custody along with other leaders and taken to the Nampally police station. Demonstrations and processions were staged in Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda, Nizamabad and other districts in Telangana.

Kodandaram termed the arrests undemocratic and added that they were taken into custody when they are staging a peaceful protest march.

It was on December 23 in 2009 that the Congress has backtracked on its promise that the process of carving a separate Telangana state had commenced. Heavy police force was deployed at the premises of Legislative Assembly. MLAs, MLCs and media personnel were not allowed to enter the Assembly premises.
