'Decision on Telangana issue will be announced within a month', says Union Home Minister Shinde

After the all-party meeting convened by the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday at New Delhi in which 16 representatives from the 8 political parties participated, Shinde speaking to media said that the Centre will announce a decision on the demand within a month.

Speaking to media after the meeting that lasted for nearly 70 minutes, he said that the representatives at the meeting asked the Centre to take a decision on the issue at the earliest possible time. He added that he would brief the Centre on the matter and the government would come out with a solution on the issue within a month. He requested the people to maintain calm and the government will take a decision and whatever will happen will be good. He gave no hint as to what lies in the government on the issue. Shinde said that this was the last such all-party meeting on the issue and refused to disclose the details of the stand taken by the political parties and said that it was an in-camera meeting.

What the political parties said

The Congress that sent two representatives gave quite opposite views while the representatives of the major opposition in the State Telugu Desam handed over a sealed cover containing the party's letter to the Pranab Mukherjees committee given in 2008 where it had backed Telangana.

TRS demanded the Centre to say yes or no to the issue of statehood without delay.

BJP represented by its State president G Kishan Reddy and K Hari Babu and CPI party K Narayana wanted bifurcation while CPI(M) represented by Raghavulu wanted the State united. MIM supported United Andhra Pradesh but pointed out to concede a separate State, it should be Rayala-Telangana with Hyderabad as its capital.

YSR Congress said that it honors the sentiments of the people of Telangana and would abide by the Centre's decision on the issue.

TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao while giving a call for Telangana bandh on Saturday said, "This is a hopeless meeting I have ever seen. Who is going to believe Union Home Minister SK Shinde's statement that a decision will be taken within a month?"

PCC president Botcha Satyanarayana welcomes Home Minister's statement

The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Botcha Satyanarayana on Friday welcomed that Union Home Minister's statement. Speaking to media at Hyderabad, he said that it would explain how concerned the Centre and the Congress leadership were about the issue. He added that a permanent solution would come out on the issue persisting for demands.
