67 candidates in fray for bye-elections

After withdrawals on Saturday, 67 candidates remained in the fray for the bye-elections in the seven assembly constituencies. The bye-election would be held on March 18, 2012.

Kovur in Nellore district has the maximum number of candidates in fray -14, while Mahabubnagar has 13 and Nagarkurnool with 11. Speaking at a media conference in Hyderabad, Chief Electoral Office Bhanwar Lal said that the number of voters in these constituencies have gone up to 13,81,443.

Bhanwar Lal said that the MD of the AP Beverages Corporation would be held answerable if the outgo of liquor is increased during the period from February 16 to March 18, to that of corresponding period last year. The AP Beverages Corporation is the sole supplier of liquor to wine shops in the State.

72,000 litres of liquor and Rs. 3.6 crore of cash was seized so far. 358 persons were arrested so far in liquor seizures and another 240 for misuse of vehicles, Bhanwar Lal said. The EC is also examining a complaint made against Information Minister DK Aruna for misusing her position while campaigning in the bye-election.
