Congress contemplating on options to resolve Telangana issue

January 16, 2013

With the January 28 deadline looming, the Congress central leadership is still trying to figure out the best option in gaining the maximum political mileage while resolving the Telangana crisis in the state. Union Minister and AICC secretary Arun Yadav stated that the Congress would soon announce the formation of Telangana state. According to sources, the issue at hand for the Congress is not the status of Hyderabad, but the merger of Rayalaseema districts. Even though the majority of the Seemandhra leaders are insisting to keep the state united, some of them are more worried about giving away Hyderabad to the Telangana state.

Sources say that Rahul Gandhi was of the view that inclusion of Kadapa and Kurnool in Telangana would minimize the advantage to the YSR Congress Party. Chidambaram and Vayalar Ravi have reportedly favored the Telangana state at the Congress core group meeting. However, Ghulam Nabi Azad, AK Antony and Sushil Kumar Shinde were said to have opposed to the bifurcation of the State.

Meanwhile, a number of Seemandhra leaders have met the Central leadership leaders in New Delhi and have said that there would be a flood of resignations from the Seemandhra leaders if the Telangana state is formed. They also said Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi had earlier opposed to the formation of smaller states.
