Akbaruddin Owaisi

Akbaruddin Owaisi is a politician belonging to All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimin party. He is the floor leader of the party in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He is also the sitting MLA of Chandrayan Gutta constituency in Hyderabad.

Early life

Akbaruddin was born on 14 June 1970. He is the son of Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi and younger brother of Asaduddin Owaisi.

Alleged hate speech

An FIR was registered against Akbaruddin Owaisi for an alleged hate speech he delivered at Nirmal town in Adilabad. The FIR was registered suo moto at the Nirmal police station on January 2, 2013. The alleged incident happened at a public meeting in December 2012 which was attended by 25,000 people.

Akbaruddin was arrested by the police on January 8, 2013 and spent 40 days in prison. He received bail on February 15, 2013 citing health reasons.

In October 2015, it was revealed that the police has failed to file a chargesheet even after 34 months of registering the FIR. If the police fail to file a chargesheet within 36 months from the date of registration of FIR, the accused can discharge a petition in the court under Section 468 of the CrPC. When an activist asked the investigating officer, he was told that the police had sent tapes of the video and audio clippings of the speech and also voice samples of Akbaruddin to Central Forensic Lab at Chandigarh in February 2013, but are yet to receive a report.
