Sakala Janula Samme

The state government employees of the Telangana regions have gone on an general strike - 'Sakala Janula Samme' from September 13, 2011 till October 24, 2011 to press the demand for a separate Telangana state. Most of the political parties of the Telangana regions are in solidarity with the general strike. The General Strike is the brainchild of the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee. On August 31, JAC convener Prof. M Kodandaram has announced the timeline of the general strike.

September 12

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi has called for a 'Rail Roko' on September 13 in solidarity with the general strike. TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao also called on for a film theatre bandh on the 14th and 15th of September and a National Highway rasta roko on 18th. Senior BJP leader Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao said that the 4.5 crore population of Telangana are behind the state government employees who are participating in the general strike. However, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy warned of strict action against agitating employees.

September 13

The indefinite general strike begins all across Telangana. Bandh, Rasta Roko and protests were witnessed in all districts of the region.

September 15

The State Government is preparing to take action on contract and outsourced workers who are participating in the indefinite General Strike in Telangana. Notices would be issued to outsourcing agencies not to redeploy the workers who are participating in the strike and abstaining from work. For regular government employees who abstained from duties, there will be no pay for the same period. Provisions under GO 177 would also be enforced.

September 16

Telangana Congress leaders warn the Government not to curb the Sakalajanula Samme by invoking ESMA provisions. They also reiterate their September 30 deadline for the Centre to come up with a positive announcement on Telangana.

September 18

An all-party delegation met with Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy at the CM's camp office and submitted a memorandum to withdraw security forced deployed at the Singareni Collieries. They alleged that the workers who are on strike in support of a separate Telangana state are being forced to work by the personnel of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) who are deployed at the mines.

September 19

Public transportation took a major hit during the Telangana 'Sakala Janula Samme' on seventh day as the APSRTC employees joined the general strike. Nearly 10,000 buses were unmoved from the 89 bus depots across the ten districts of Telangana region.

September 20

The Telangana Electricity Employees' Joint Action Committee (TEEJAC) decides to boycott their duties and join the strike. In a meeting held at the Mint Compound by the TEEJAC, it was decided that the Electricity employees would boycott their regular duties from tomorrow onwards except in cases of emergency services like power supply and maintenance.

TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao hints at going on a fast-undo-death for Telangana cause again.

September 24

36-hour Rail Roko begins at 6am. Auto drivers also join the agitation calling for a 2 day auto bandh.

September 25

TJAC Chairman M Kodandaram says that Rail Roko will not be extended.

September 26

Telangana JAC announces the schedule of next phase of Telangana agitations.

September 27

Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal was arrested by the police at the Transport Department's Central office in Hyderabad. Rajagopal was here at the Central office to show solidarity with the Additional Transport Commissioner P Srinivas who was assaulted by Telangana activists on Monday.

September 28

The 'Sakala Janula Samme' reached Day 16. As called by the Telangana Joint Action Committee, the TJAC leaders and various political parties in Hyderabad have staged rasta rokos at prime locations in the city.

October 3

A delegation comprising of TJAC convener M Kodandaram, TRS president K Chandrasekhar and others met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and urged him to initiate the process of formation of a separate Telangana state. The T-Congress leaders also meets the PM to apprise him on the current situation in Telangana.

October 4

With no indications of the 'Sakala Janula Samme' easing up, the Government has softened its stand and has agreed for six hour uninterrupted power supply to farmers in the Telangana region. In response to a request by Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has directed the Eastern Grid to provide 800 MW to the State.

October 7

The Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) has rescheduled the Rail roko agitation and decided to organize it on October 12, 13 and 14. The rescheduling was done to avoid clash with other agitation programmes as part of the Telangana movement.

October 15

The 3-day rail roko agitation begins in Telangana. Several leaders who are staging the rail roko in Telangana were arrested by the police.

October 17

The bandh call given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) across Telangana evoked good response as the agitation went peaceful across the region. The TJAC has called for a bandh on Monday in protest against the arrests made during the rail roko protests over the weekend.

October 18

The schools across Telangana region have reopened Tuesday even as the Sakala Janula Samme entered its 36th day.

October 24

The Sakala Janula Samme came to an end Monday after the Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee (TEJAC) has agreed to call off the strike after a series of negotiations with the government. The TEJAC has announced that it is calling off the 42-day-old strike, which is one of the longest agitations by the government employees in the State.
