Self Help Groups roped in by GHMC to distribute LED lights
June 20, 2017
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to use the Self-help groups (SHG)s to distribute about one crore LED bulbs to the 25 lakh households under its limits. This is an innovative attempt to bring Hyderabad into the fold of energy conservation.
The SHGs will be responsible to visit door-to-door to sell LED bulbs. Each household will get four LED bulbs, four LED tube lights and five-star rated fans at subsidised rates, thanks to the move by GHMC.
Town Level Federations (TLF)s, each with 30 to 40 SHGs will be constituted. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Government entity, will distribute the material to TLFs which in turn will channel them to SHGs for distribution. A commission will be paid to SHG members for every sale. It is estimated that the switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs will reduce the monthly power bill by 50 per cent. The GHMC has earlier tied up with the EESL to supply energy efficient electrical equipment to the house hold by using the municipal offices and in other places as distribution centres. The sales were lacklustre with only 4.20 lakh LED bulbs and tube lights sold through them. Now, with the tie up with SHGs, the sales process will gain momentum.
Mayor Bonthu Rammohan will launch the sale of LED bulbs through SHGs on Wednesday.
